StigmaWatch has taken action in relation to an inappropriate costume – the 'Insane Asylum Lunatic 'Skitzo' Costume', a full-length orange jumpsuit with vinyl restraints and mask.Costume company Kool and Unusual sells the costume and 'promises' to have 'you looking the part of a psychotic madman in no time'. The costume has been displayed on their website since December 2008.
StigmaWatch contacted Kool and Unusual, as well as costume designer Rubies Masquerade, to pass on concerns the costume and wording is stigmatizing and offensive to many.
Kool and Unusual removed the reference to the costume turning you into a 'psychotic madman' and will no longer be stocking the costume.
StigmaWatch is continuing its efforts to have the manufacturers deal with the issue.
