SANE StigmaWatch was informed of a report in Wagga Wagga’s The Daily Advertiser regarding the installation of suicide prevention barriers, with readers concerned about repeat allusions to the suicide method.
While the topic covered was an important issue and in the public interest, StigmaWatch felt the repeat references to method did not add value to the report and were at risk of encouraging copycat behaviour.
StigmaWatch wrote to the journalist in question, requesting the newspaper amend the article and remove the references.
The journalist replied to StigmaWatch, saying 'thanks for the information and apologies if the story missed the mark. I have removed it from our website.'
