Choosing a health professional

Not all health professionals are the same. Each has their own personality and style of treatment and support. Finding the right fit is important. This can take time and the first health professional you see may not be the right one. Try not to give up. If you don’t feel comfortable with the first person you see, it can be a good idea to try someone different.

It’s also important to let your health professional know if you aren’t happy with the progress you’re making. They may be able to adapt their structure, strategy, style or tone to something that's more effective for you.

When looking for a new mental health professional, consider whether you feel comfortable talking to a male or female, someone that’s mature or younger, or a professional that is close by or easily accessible on public transport.

It’s also worth thinking through treatment preferences. Would you respond better to someone with a gentle reflective counselling style or someone who provides a lot of suggestions and guidance? Are you willing to do ‘homework’ and practice new strategies between sessions?

It may be possible to have a brief phone conversation with a potential new practitioner in order to get a sense of fit even before the first session. Consider asking about their approach to your particular issue which will help you to get a sense their appropriateness for you.
