Men’s mental health: how to seek help

For many men, asking for help with mental health is a challenge that gets left by the wayside. A lot of men struggle to talk about personal experiences and strong emotions.

We speak to Glen Benton, from On The Line and MensLine Australia for tips on how to help men seek help.

Why is it hard for men to seek help for their mental health?

While it may appear that way, it’s not actually harder for men to seek help. Expectations to be constantly stoic and show no emotion or vulnerability are outdated and men simply don’t need to expect that of themselves anymore.

Help and support is available. If you’re not sure what to do, call MensLine Australia 24/7 on 1300 987 978 to talk with a counsellor.

What if the man you’re supporting doesn’t want help?

It can be extremely difficult to witness the damage taking place for someone, especially if they can’t identify it themselves. If you’re concerned about their safety it’s important to act when professional intervention is needed.

There are lots of things that you can do to support someone you’re concerned about. Services such as the Suicide Call Back Service or MensLine Australia are great options for professional advice, but if you think that someone may be at immediate risk, always contact 000.

It’s important to remember that you’re human too. You also need support and care. Remember to take care of yourself by eating and sleeping well. Self-support goes a long way when you’re supporting someone else.

Is it better for men to offer men support?

This can be subjective. Mental illness affects people differently. Some men prefer to talk to men, others to women. Everyone is different. The most important thing to remember is that you feel safe and supported by who is supporting you, no matter what their gender is.

Should a partner sit in on counselling sessions?

This also varies from person to person. If you’re seeking help, ask yourself: ‘is my partner’s presence at my sessions going to be helpful?’ This can be something that you can ask a professional about first. MensLine Australia 24/7 would be able to provide helpful advice on your situation.

What resources are available on men’s mental health?

MensLine Australia is a 24/7 counselling service for men and their families and friends. We encourage anyone to contact us and speak to one of our qualified counsellors on 1300 789 978.
